Well. Lord, there are some days
when I feel like 40,000 people
who have tramped through my life--
"Where is this? Can I have that?
              Excuse me, are you busy?
              Can you help me?"

Most of the time I don't mind.
But I can understand why you never
              wrote a poem,
or a song, or painted a picture.
Did you miss the quiet carpenter's shop
with its clean smell of shavings,
              Joseph's beloved plane,
each tool worn to fit your fingertips?
Did you miss that feeling of
              accomplishment from making
              simple benches and tables?
Yet you never said "Go away" to anybody.

Was it because you could see beyond
              their small questions,
to their real needs--and you loved them?
You loved them so much you didn't want
              them to leave unsatisfied.

Help me to see the needs beneath the masks.
Help me to trust you for the right time
              for everything.
to not be upset when other people need me,
              and to remember
that what I want done now may
              not be necessary at all.
